‘Growing together
with God’
Wishing you all a very happy holy Christmas and New Year. May God bless you all and keep you safe.
In this festive period make sure you take time out to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. A little baby boy Jesus who was sent to save the world. Thank you for giving me the privilege of teaching your wonderful children. They truly are very special individuals who have worked immensely hard.
A fantastic term!

‘Growing together with God’
What
an exciting week we’ve had. We worked incredibly hard as a class
this week filming our Advent liturgy which we will share with you.
I was so proud of every single member of our class who spoke so
clearly and with confidence. You truly are maturing Class 4 and it
is wonderful to see you growing in confidence every
week.
We’ve been practicing and
perfecting our Christmas Carols and hopefully you’ll be able to
hear us perform.
On Friday, we were really excited to
complete our Santa dash. Mrs Baxter rang Santa who even remembered
to allow it to snow for us which made it extra
special.
What have we been up to this
week?
Literacy
We have started to learn about
writing narratives this week. We watched the clip ‘Bear and the
Hare’ all about a Bear (who normally spends Christmas hibernating)
celebrating Christmas for the very First time. We have been
learning about how to create setting descriptions to open this
story and we can’t wait to continue these pieces of writing and
share them with you.

Maths
In Maths this week we have
learned about ordering and comparing fractions. We have also found
fractions of amounts. I will set some My Maths work on this for
anyone needing it.
Science
This week we learned all about
the types of teeth and their functions.
Internet
Safety
Mrs Angel came to teach us the
importance of internet safety this week. Please ensure you discuss
this with your child.
You can visit https://nationalonlinesafety.com/ for further
information on what is and is not appropriate for your
child.

Our Advent Liturgy - Week 2
BLOG POST 11: 27/11/20
‘Growing together with God’
This week our Sports Leaders held
a very special assembly where we welcomed Ray Matthews to kick
start our mile a day at school. It was a wonderful morning and we
are really inspired to get fitter, run faster and go further than
we’ve ever gone before. A special mention to Isabelle J (fastest in
class 4), Archie M (furthest in Class 4) and Oscar and Isabelle S
(most improved in Class 4).
As we enter Advent this weekend we are asking
children to set up their cribs at home and to take the time to
reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. Father Des has kindly
given each member of our class an advent calendar. This Sunday we
are asked to think about the HOPE that Jesus the Son of God brought
to the world. Thank you Father Des! If you do get chance please
send us a picture of your crib to
class4@stgerardsprimary.org.
Special
mentions
Well done to our golden star- he is kind to
everyone and gives 100% in everything he does.
Congratulations to our achievement
award winner who has been working incredibly hard in Maths and
Literacy with a smile on her face in every lesson.
Finally, a big well done to our
first sporting hero who has shown real enthusiasm in every single
PE lesson! A true sportswoman!
What have we been up to this week?
Science
We learned all about our digestive system this
week. We watched a really interesting video that explained more
about how our bodies digest food. Then we completed some beautiful
double page spreads with some fantastic diagrams.
Literacy
We completed our biographies this week about Ray
Matthews. We were really interested with what we found out about
him. In SPaG we learned all about the difference between a phrase
and a clause as well as learning about coordinating conjunctions.
Visit the following websites to refresh your memories.

Maths
I am delighted to say Class 4 is now really
confident in using all four operations (multiplication, division,
addition and subtraction). We have moved on this week to fractions
and started off with the basics. I will be setting work on the four
operations over the next few weeks (MyMaths) so that children can
continue to practice these skills at home and consolidate their
learning.
RE
This week we completed our PowerPoints on Judaism
and also spent some time exploring traditional Jewish
objects.

‘Growing together with
God’
Class 4 have had a marvellous
week of learning. We celebrated being ‘united against bullying’ to
celebrate anti-bullying week. Our odd sock day this week was judged
by Mrs Angel. Miley, Isabelle and Eleanor were the winners of our
mini class competition. Well done ladies!
What have we been up to this
week?
Music
This week we were absolutely
delighted to be accompanied by Mrs Sutton who helped us prepare our
Christmas carols. We really are a talented bunch of singers and
performers and can’t wait to share these with you over the festive
period.
Maths
This week we looked at the bus
stop method for division. On Friday we also looked at the chunking
method. We all worked incredibly hard indeed. I have set some
homework on MyMaths for these two areas so that your child can keep
practicing at home and decide which method they
prefer.
Literacy
This week carried out research
about a local sports hero named Ray Matthews who raises money for
charities and schools in Rotherham. Next Tuesday Ray will be coming
to our school and we are looking forward to asking him lots of
questions about his life so that we can finish our biographies all
about him. He will also be encouraging us all to complete a mile a
day every single day.
RE
This week we learned about
Judaism. We completed or own PowerPoint presentations based on
information about the Torah, the Tenakh and Bar
Mitzvahs.
Ten:Ten
This week we learned that we
were created by God who cares for us and wants us to put our faith
in Him. We learnt that becoming an adult is a natural phase of
life.
PE
Isabelle S, Olivia and Eleanor
led us in PE warm ups they had designed at home this week which
were fantastic. They showed a great understanding of what is needed
including stretches, raising heart rates and clearly demonstrating
moves to their peers.
We carried out gymnastics
this week. Our focus areas were building on some of the skills we
perfected in cheer leading (tuck, pike, straddle and straight
jumps) as well as the different types of roles and balances. We
will continue to build on these skills and then we will be
recording our routines at the end of term.
In football we continued to
focus on passing, stopping and dribbling the ball as well as
discussing some of the basic rules of football.

‘Growing Together
with God’
Miss Jenkinson,
Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
We have had such a marvellous
week of learning and reflection. We have really felt the special
presence of God in our classroom and school this week. We prayed
especially for those who gave their life to fight in WW1 as well as
all those in our own families and communities who have
died.
We held our very own short service in class as
well as completing our 2 minutes silence.
RE
As we came to the end of our learning about being
called some children from our class led us in a chid- led liturgy.
They chose scripture based on the Pentecost where the disciples
were filled with the strength of the Holy Spirit and went out to
spread the good news about Christ.
The children each stood and held a pebble and
asked God to fill someone who they knew needed strength with the
power of the Holy Spirt. Our mission this week (chosen by the
children) is to be an example of Jesus by helping someone in need,
sharing with someone, being kind and patient or by doing something
that is based around looking after our world.
Literacy
We completed our literacy based on the clip Alma.
As you can see the end result was absolutely
stunning.
The children have worked really hard illustrating
their work using watercolours and spent time ensuring this was
their best piece of writing so far. I was so overwhelmed with the
high standard of work! https://www.literacyshed.com/alma.html
Maths
This week we have cracked multiplication (x a 2/3
digit by a 1/2 digit). This was something we have had to really
persevere at but I am really glad we all finally understand. We are
now ready to move onto the written method for
division.
PE
We played a new game called football rounders. It
was great fun and allowed us to practice some of the skills needed
for a football game. We also completed a dance which was based
around women and men’s roles in the World War 1
effort.
French
We revisited learning from Year 3 (greetings,
numbers and colours). We then looked at learning about how to ask
questions and say we liked or disliked fruits.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ03KjwiIVM
Science
We explored the different parts of a flower and
the learned all about the pollination process. As you can see we
completed some beautiful work on what we found out

‘Growing Together

Miss Jenkinson,
Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
What a fabulous first week back. It was so wonderful to have the opportunity to speak to all parents today. Your children truly are little superstars and I feel very blessed to be their Class Teacher.
Thank you parents for all for your continued
support with homework, reading, times tables practice and spelling
practice. It really does make my job that little bit easier and
means that your child progresses quickly.
Mrs Angel has chosen our Road Safety Officers and
I must say they have done a fabulous job this week ensuring the car
park is a safe place for all our school community but especially
our children. You can see they look pretty smart in their new
hi-vis vests and are taking this role very seriously.
I have set another homework grid this term. I
would ask you to ensure your child picks one task per week.
Children are asked to practice spellings each week. So many
children who are consistent in this are now scoring almost full
marks every week. Keep it up!
Please ensure you child is reading at least 3x
per week (every night is preferable). It really does make such a
big difference with their writing progress. I am also setting
MyMaths tasks to complete which will consolidate some of what we
have covered in class and at times cover gaps missing.

Literacy
This week we have started some amazing writing
based around the spooky clip Alma. As you can see some of the
paragraphs are simply stunning. It is amazing to see how far
children’s writing skills in class are developing.
Maths
This week we have looked at x and ÷ 10/100 and
1000. We have also learned our square and cube numbers. The
children are continuing to work hard on their presentation and an
example of our work is shown on the right...
PE
This week we learned a new dance ‘Thriller.’ We
were exhausted after spending a full hour dancing but thoroughly
enjoyed ourselves. We have also started football and focused on
dribbling, passing and moving into space.

What have we been
up to this week?
We have really enjoyed our final week together.
The main highlight of this week had to be our Fun Run. Thank you to
all our sponsors. We were all successful in completing the full 5k
in Class 4. It really was an enjoyable morning.
We have also completed our
assessments this week. We have marked these together to have a look
at where we went wrong.
Our Road Safety Officers were chosen this week.
They are: Olivia, Archie, Isabelle, Eleanor, Oscar and Shauna.
These children will be working alongside Mrs Angel throughout the
year to keep us all safe in our school car park.
RE
We have completed a diary entry all about Jesus
calling Simon and Andrew. We have also learned and written about
the special Sacrament of Confirmation. We produced some beautiful
writing all about this.
Drama/Poetry
We practiced our performance poems all about Rosa
Parks, Martin Luther King, Arthur Wharton and George Washington
Carver.
Literacy
Although it took us a while, we finally managed
to type up our diary entries using Microsoft Word. This is a skill
we will continue to master as the year goes on as we feel it is so
important.
Maths
We have continued with multiplication this week
ensuring we are confident with related division facts as well as
x10/100/1000.
Let’s

This week’s super stars were Izzy and
Nicole.
Our Golden Star was Isaac.
Our Achievement Award went to
Olivia.
A reminder to all parents: Please ensure you have
followed the instructions on the newsletter to arrange a virtual
parent’s evening for you child.
I really hope you all manage to
enjoy your week off together and spend some quality time with your
families.
What an absolutely fabulous eight

‘Growing Together with God’
Miss Jenkinson, Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
What have we been
up to this week?
We learned a brand new hymn
during collective worship this week using the ‘Mark10mission’
called ‘Joyful Joyful’. We really enjoy our time together and we
always keep all our family and friends in our prayers. As October
is the month of celebrating the Rosary this week we have been
spending some of our time taking part in saying the Rosary. We have
each been given our very own Rosary Beads which we are going to
treasure. We have learned just how the powerful the Rosary can be
in helping us through life and we would love to share this
experience with our parents at home.
This week and next are
assessment weeks. We have been completing tests and Miss Jenkinson
is rather happy with the progress we are making. I do hope we can
continue working so hard and achieving great things.
Our new GIFT leaders are
Isabelle and Patrick. They will be working hard throughout the year
representing our Class in several events. Next week we are looking
forward to sharing our first child led liturgy together which they
will be leading.
A special mention to all
children and parents who have worked so hard on this term’s
homework project. The final deadline for the three pieces will be
Monday. I have been blown away by the effort and enthusiasm of
Class 4!
RE
This week we learned all about
how Jesus chose some of his disciples. We listened to scripture
about Simon and Peter, who were fisherman, and how Jesus asked them
to leave their fishing nets and follow him. We created our own
diary entries all about this in role of a bystander watching this
event unfold. We discussed how we are called to become Disciples of
Christ and ways in which we may be called in our own
futures.
Science
This week we have learned all
about what deforestation is and its devastating effects on our
world. This inspired us to create a speech to inspire others to do
something about this and make changes to the way we
live.
Maths
In Maths we have focussed on
written methods for multiplication. We have also focused on mental
strategies using known facts e.g.
3x4=12
3x40=120
30x40=1200
6x7= 42
7x6= 42
42÷7=6
42÷6=7
I have set some work on My Maths
for any child wanting more practice at this.
PE
This week, we started to
incorporate some of the lifts into our cheer leading routine as
well as including some gymnastic rolls, cartwheels and jumps. These
routines are really starting to take shape.
In high fives our focus this
week was shooting. We learned how to hold the ball in a W position
and how to bend and flick aiming at the rim of the net. Some of us
were successful in shooting and scoring a goal this week. We have
continued to become experts in learning the rules of high fives and
there are many super star players.
History/Literacy
Our focus has been diary
writing. We have looked at what good examples of diaries and
identified the features. We then learned all about the raid at
Lindisfarne. This was a terrible moment in History when the Vikings
raided the Holy Island. We wrote diary entries in the role of
Alcuin (an Anglo-Saxon farmer) who lived close to St Cuthbert’s and
saw the event unfold.

What have we been up to this week?
What an exciting week it has been.
We have literally worked our little socks off! A very special
mention to Patrick and Isabelle this weekend, as they make their
First Holy Communion. May God bless you on your special
day.
It was wonderful to welcome Father Des into our classroom this week. The children were delighted to see him.
This week we completed activities
on the school laptops. We learnt how to type, save documents to a
shared file at school as well as using online learning sites for
Maths and Literacy. We will continue to
practice these skills in preparation for any future home learning
that takes place
We took part in Operation Christmas Child on Friday. This made us all realise how lucky we are. We kept all the children receiving the gifts in our prayers during collective worship. We are so grateful to Mrs Ventura and Mrs Poole for giving up their precious time to allow us to make them.
We really enjoyed episode four of
the ‘mark10mission’ and loved learning a brand new song. Collective
worship, which happens every Monday morning, is a fabulous way for
our class to come together, pray, sing and reflect on how we can
change our behaviours to be more like Jesus.
Mrs Angel also brought us together to take part in Circle-Time where we were able to discuss how we were feeling.
We had the opportunity to build
the roof of a longhouse made by James’ Grandad. It was a fabulous
experience.
We wanted to say a huge thankyou to all children and parents in Class 4, but especially James’ Grandad, as the homework produced has been breath-taking this week.
Keep up the hard work!
Our sports leaders have helped
Miss Jenkinson at break times set up some athletic competitions
which have again proved popular. This week we completed the speed
bounce challenge.
Well done Class 4 who won both
battles against Class 3 and Class 5 on Times Tables Rock Stars.
Let’s do the same this week. Our next battle will commence on
Monday.
RE
We have started a new topic all about being
‘called’ this week. We spoke about special moments in our lives
when we have been called to undertake important jobs such as
monitors in school, becoming bridesmaids/page boys and even being
given responsibilities at home. We listened to the stories of
Samuel and David who were called by God in the Bible to underrate
special roles. We carried out a liturgical dance all about being
chosen by God and discussed ways in which we are
chosen.
SPaG
Our SPaG focuses this week has been pronouns and
relative pronouns. We have identified them and tried to use them
instead of repeating names in our writing.
Maths
This week we have been solving problems involving
addition and subtraction. We have worked incredibly hard and
persevered with this as some of us found it very tricky to start
with. We have started to look at multiplying using a written
method. We will be continuing with this on Monday. I have asked
children who do not know how to tell the time to ask a parent to
help them with this over the weekend. I have set some optional home
work on My Maths to help with this.
PE
This week we learned the rules of high fives. We
were encouraged to think about using all the skills we’ve learned
so far and applying them into game situations. We also carried out
our first cheerleading session which proved popular with everyone
in class. We will continue these routines and eventually add them
to our class blog when they are ready.
History
This week we completed a performance poem about
Rosa Parks. It was very powerful and we really enjoyed learning all
about her.

This week’s super stars were Olivia and
James.
Our golden star was Miley Burns.

Miss Jenkinson,
Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
Another exciting, jam-packed week of learning! It
has certainly been a week full of achievements, learning and
laughter. We managed to have our first assembly with Mrs Baxter on
Friday and we were all so excited!
Our sports leaders- Oliver and Kayla- really
played a special part in making some of our playtimes really
special by introducing the first competition to key stage 2
(standing long jump). It was great to see everyone getting involved
and improving the distance they could jump. The children even
managed to convince Mr Watts and Mr Drury to have a
go!
Our worship leaders also deserve a special
mention. They lead us so beautifully in prayer- well done Sullivan
and Eleanor! We have loved watching ‘themark10mission’ during
collective worship as a class. This is a fabulous resource which we
are thoroughly enjoying. Check it out using the link below.
https://www.themark10mission.co.uk
We now have access to My Maths which is a
fantastic online maths programme that allows children to complete
online lessons, homework and gives instant feedback to class
teachers. I have given out login details and passwords. I will also
ensure these are stuck into homework books on Monday. Please if you
get chance over the weekend check this site out. I will set a
homework task (optional) for you to have a go at.
Our homework celebration corner is coming along
really nicely. It is so wonderful to celebrate all the effort that
has been put in by children in their own time. It is great to see
children using Spelling Frame too!
All in all- a wonderful week of
learning!
What have we been up to this week?
Black History
Month
This Thursday marked the start of Black History
Month. We have worked really hard this Friday on performance
poetry. It will take us a while to complete but throughout the
month of October we will be using our garden area to finish our
final performances. We will be entering a Blue Peter competition
with our final piece and will also share this on this page when it
is finished so keep your eyes peeled!

Literacy
We have blown Miss Jenkinson away this week in
creating the most incredible newspaper reports. We based our
reports on the ‘Guardian’s Three Little Pig’ video. We are really
trying hard when editing and improving our writing- even if Miss
Jenkinson does say (20 times at least), “Proper nouns need capital
letters.” - Video link on the right.
SPaG
Our SPaG focuses this week have been identifying
and using adjectives and adverbs. We have also learned about direct
and indirect speech and the punctuation and vocabulary associated
with this. Some of us even managed to remember this new skill in
our newspaper reports.
Maths
We are really working hard each morning improving
our arithmetic scores. Arriving on time really allows us to warm
our brains up ready for our maths lessons. This week’s focuses in
maths have been mental strategy as well as formal written methods
for addition and subtraction. We have used part whole models, place
value charts and bar models in order to help us understand these
methods. I was so pleased to see such fabulous progress throughout
the week with everyone in class.
PE
This week we completed our war dance and moved to
traditional Viking dance. We have really enjoyed learning some of
the basic footwork. In outdoor PE, we have focused on the rules of
mat ball and high fives. Some of us began to practice our shooting
skills.
History/Geography
This week we learned how to use a key to label a
map showing where the Vikings invaded and settled. We also learned
all about the raid at Lindisfarne by watching videos and reading
information. We are looking forward to completing some writing
about this.

We were thrilled to find more challenge books
this week. Children have had these handed out and our book review
wallet is bursting. It is so wonderful to see so many of you at
home making a special effort to read. I am sure plenty of children
will be receiving the hot chocolate reward at the end of this
term.

Miss
Jenkinson, Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
Well what a delightful week Class 4! It has
been wonderful to see our classroom coming to life with all your
amazing work going up in class and around school.
Our sports leaders and school counsellors
have been awarded their special badges and held their first
meetings. I am sure they will do us proud throughout the
year!
Thank you for encouraging your children to
bring in their homework and learn their spellings. I have been
blown away with some of the superb efforts including: amazing
writing, Viking artwork, Viking pancakes, Viking cupcakes, Viking
cake, Viking timeline, fact files and Viking board games. Remember
there are still a few weeks to get in your three pieces of
homework.
Keep working hard on your spellings- I was
so impressed this week after so many children really worked hard on
Spelling Frame at home. Coimhe was top of the class and deserves a
special mention as we all agreed it would be pretty tough to knock
her off top spot.
We are signed up for two battles against
Class 3 and 5 on Times Tables Rock stars this week. Don’t forget to
log in and get Class 4 to the top!
What have we been up to this
week?
Literacy
This week we have put up our
non-chronological reports on display in our classroom. I think
you’ll agree that they look pretty awesome and this was down to the
sheer hard work and concentration we took in illustrating and
writing them up into best.
We have also read the book-
‘Here We Are’. Inspired by this book, we created our own mood poems
based on how we were feeling. We also created some awesome colour
blending using pastels and copied these poems up into best using
tracing paper. We are really proud of our work which is displayed
in the hall.
SPaG
We have drastically improved our
scores this week in our spelling tests. Miss Jenkinson and Mrs
Jenkinson were bursting with pride after such an improvement. Well
done everyone.
We have been learning about
nouns, verbs and modal verbs in our grammar lessons.
Maths
This week we have been learning
to solve problems involving rounding, to count backwards through
zero, to read roman numerals up to 1000 and to use an understanding
of place value to add and subtract large numbers mentally. We have
taken some pictures of our learning to share with you.
RE
This week we learned all about
the story of Ruth and Naomi. We created a code for living all about
how Ruth’s care and love shown towards her mother in law as well as
their faith in God can inspire us. We created some beautiful pieces
of RE in our books.
PE
In preparation for learning all
about the Raid on Lindisfarne, this week we created a class Viking
war dance. We will be finishing this dance next week. Some of us
were reluctant dancers to start with but really got into the spirit
of it when we got started.
We have also continued learning
about the skills of high fives. This week we focussed on game play
and spacing as well as continuing to practice our footwork and
passing skills.
Science
In Science we have been learning
about grouping animals according to whether they are fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds or mammals.
Let’s

Shauna and Sully. Shauna your kind and gentle nature coupled with
your determination to always do you best has been very impressive.
You truly deserve the award! Sully you have had a phenomenal week
of learning this week. I have been so impressed with your work
ethic and your determination to improve and impress. Well
done!
Well done to the ‘Wave Surfers’ who were
this week’s winners of the table points. You really have had a
great week of learning and have ensured your table has been kept
neat and tidy.
Class 4 Key
information
Our PE days are Mondays and
Wednesdays. Please ensure you come to school in the correct PE kit
and suitable outdoor trainers. Earrings must be taken out
(independently) and hair should be tied up.
Reading
Please make an extra special
effort to sign your child’s reading record (even if they are
reading independently). Reading together regularly really does
enable your child to flourish in school.
We are still missing a large
number of reading challenge books.
Please could you have one more look at home?

‘Growing Together with God’
Miss
Jenkinson, Mrs Jenkinson and Mrs Angel
What a superb second week of
learning! We really are producing some high quality work as well as
getting our heads down and working hard. I really am so proud of
Class 4 this week for having such a positive attitude towards their
learning. It really is paying off!
Literacy
This week we have completed our
non-chronological reports all about the Vikings which will be
displayed in our classroom. Class four have worked incredibly hard
illustrating these pieces and the results are simply stunning. We
have also read the book ‘Here we are’ and have started to plan our
own poems based on colours and emotions. We can’t wait to share
them with you.
Maths
This week we have been using our
place value knowledge to help us add/subtract 100, 1000, 10000.
1000000 and 1,000,000 as well as learning about how to round
numbers to the nearest 10,100, 1000, 10000 and 100000.We have been
carrying out daily arithmetic challenges and focusing on our 6x
tables. We have also really persevered in ensuring that
presentation in our books is of the highest standard.
RE
Our RE topic is ‘people’. This
week we learnt all about Jacob. Mrs Angel helped us learning the
song ‘Jacob and Sons’ from Joseph and the Technicolour Dream coat.
We really enjoyed ourselves.
PE
We have been learning all about
the rules of High Fives (Netball) this week. Our focus areas have
been our footwork and passing. We have also completed a treasure
hunt based on the Vikings which was so much fun!
Science
In Science this week we have
been learning about how to classify animals into
groups.

Introducing…
What have we been up to this week?
This week we have spent time getting to know one another. We talked about our rights at school as well as what our teachers in school expect from us. We created some digital art which we have displayed in our RE area.
Each week we will share pictures of some of our fabulous work that we have carried out and share what we have been learning so keep your eyes peeled. Our first topic is the Vikings and we’ve had a great start in writing non-chronological reports and learning all about them.
What else have we been up to?
Check out other pictures of some of our amazing work below…
Let’s Celebrate
Each week one child will be chosen to be our superstar of the week for being an ‘always’ child. Well done to Patrick and Laura who have had an exceptional start- for ALWAYS listening, ALWAYS giving 100% and for ALWAYS being kind.
