One of the stories we hear at this time of year is about Mary and Joseph taking Jesus, as a baby, to be presented in the Temple.

Mary and Joseph made many journeys to the Temple.

We remember this story on 2nd February, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus.

Candles are blessed and carried on this day to remind us that Jesus would bring light and joy to the world.

Read the story with an adult.

Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple. They wanted to thank God for him. At the Temple, they met an old man called Simeon.

He was a good and holy person. He often went to the Temple to pray.

When he saw Jesus, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God.

He said, “This baby will bring light and joy to the world.” Mary and Joseph were very surprised by Simeon’s words and didn’t know what he meant at the time. Simeon blessed them.

After that, they met Anna. She was eighty-four years old and spent all her time in the Temple praying. She said a thank-you prayer to God for Jesus and told everyone that he would bring happiness to those who loved God.

Mary and Joseph took Jesus home to Nazareth where he grew up and learned to praise God.

Based on Luke 2: 23 – 40

Video : Anna and Simeon

Questions

  • Who are the special people in this story?
  • What did Simeon say about Jesus?
  • What do you think this meant?
  • How do you think Jesus brings light to the world?
  • How can we bring joy to others?

Bob makes a journey to the moon each day. His rocket is getting a little old.

I would only like you to draw and label the parts of your design and write a list of the things you will need to make it today.

We won't begin actually building until tomorrow. Remember planning is essential for any creation. Bring your designs to share on the 2:30pm zoom.

Our Church

We have been thinking of special people in our church family.
Can you read the text with an adult and answer the questions below?

Image description

The priest leads the parish family as they gather to celebrate Mass at church on Sunday.

The priest is a special person who has been chosen to do God’s work.

The priest wears different coloured vestments according to the time of the Church’s Year. Green is worn in Ordinary times.
As a gathering hymn is being sung the priest and the altar servers process through the church to the altar. The priest, with everyone, makes the Sign of the Cross and says some words of welcome. After looking at the picture, discuss these questions together.

Q What is happening in this picture?

Q Which special person can you see?
Q What is the priest wearing?
Q What colour is the priest wearing? What time is it in the Church’s Year?
Q What is the priest doing?
Q What do you think he means by holding out his arms?
