FUN FRIDAY

As today is the last day (hopefully) of home learning I just wanted to say a massive thank you. Thank you to Mr Drury for sorting out the many technical issues and updating our website every day. Thank you to the parents who have worked incredibly hard supporting their children from home- I know this has not been an easy job and I have been so impressed with how much support and help they have given. Finally, and most importantly to the children at home and in school… I am SO proud of each and every one of you. You’ve been so understanding and accepting of the many changes that have taken place in your lives and handled these situations with maturity, independence and determination. I am incredibly excited to bring us all back together on Monday. You should be so proud of yourselves. I certainly am very proud of you. Well done everyone

Please log into Zoom at 9.15am where you will be taking part in a scavenger hunt and an end of Zoom selfie.

Complete the party dances. Then spend time reading, playing outside or watching television-you deserve it!
11.30am

Please log into Zoom with a treat (a bun, sweets, crisps or chocolate). We will be ending with a few more games and a prayer.

It should be titled ‘Home Schooling’. I have given you a WAGOLL below. WE will perform these on Friday.

Home Schooling

In the days of distance learning all through the class room
The children were getting ready to talk to their teacher through Zoom
The backgrounds were selected, most with great care
In hopes that their teacher would soon be there

The children were huddled all snug for their call
While parents hoped that she could help with it all
Mama fretted the science, and I feared the math
But the children were waiting and all started to nap

When up on the screen arose such a clatter
I sprang to the device to see what was the matter
The microphone wouldn’t work, the connection was bad
The internet was down, and we all blamed dad
When what to my wandering eyes should appear
But our teacher, to calm all our greatest fears

With a patient smile so lively with ease
I knew our homework would now be a breeze
More rapid then eagles the understanding came
Our children delighted as she called them by name
Now Billy, now Jane, now Coral and Sarah,
On Breezie, and Richie, and Ocean, and Tarah
To your books, she cried, to your work, do it all
Then dash away, dash away, dash away all
As leaves before the hurricane fly
The children started to work, and they didn’t even cry

And throughout all the houses, through their courses they flew
Through English, and writing, and algebra too
Then, with a wink of her eye and a twist of her head
Our teacher told us we had nothing to dread
I spoke not a word, but checked my child’s work
Then she filled up the gradebook and turned with a jerk
I thanked her so kindly as she waved goodbye
And ended the zoom as I let out a sigh
But I heard her exclaim as she went out of sight
Your doing great with distance learning, it will all be alright

LITERACY

Well done yesterday I saw a big improvement in terms of presentation and effort.

Remember the key points:

-Use a pencil to write
-Use green pen (or a coloured pen) to show your editing
-Use little stars and the left hand side of the page if you need to add in sections of writing (like we do in class).

There are still many of you that need to complete your letters and edit them using the notes from yesterday.

I have attached an example of a finished letter below so that you can have a read if you a struggling to finish.

Top tip: Children in class have found it really useful to highlight any P.E.P.S or useful words and phrases as they go along. This helps them to see clearly how to improve when editing. After listening to quite a few of these I have been really pleased with the end results.

GEOGRAPHY (Please only start this when your literacy is completed)

Our geography topic will link into the work we will be carrying out next week in literacy. Please watch the lesson and make notes. We will discuss this on our 2.30pm zoom call.

If you still have time today watch Newsround and find out a little more about what is going on in the world.

LITERACY

Today I would like you to finish your letters completely. Please ensure that this work is AS NEAT as it would be if you were in school. (If you need to re-write after editing that is fine).

If you have finished please ensure you have edited your writing. To do this, consider the following:

1. Have you used formal language?

  • Avoid using words like ‘kids’ instead chose the formal version ‘children’.
  • Add in words/phrases from the sheet attached yesterday.

2. Have you checked your punctuation?

  • Do proper nouns have capital letters? Have you used full stops correctly?
  • Have you used a comma after a fronted adverbial e.g. Firstly, and to separate items on a list?
  • Have you asked a question? If so use a question mark.

3. Does it make sense?

  • Read your letter out loud. Use a green pen to add in extra bits if needed.

4. Can you add anything to make it better?

  • Expanded noun phrase -designer, extravagant clothing
  • Relative clause- designer, extravagant clothing which costs an absolute fortune
  • Use coordinating conjunctions- designer, extravagant clothing which costs an absolute fortune and can add stress to many parents who are already trying their hardest to raise their children

5. Have you checked your spellings?

  • If you are unsure a spelling is right use a dictionary or google to self-check.

6. Can you improve any of your vocabulary?

  • Have you used words like ‘bad’? Use a thesaurus (online or a book) and improve your choice of vocabulary

LITERACY

Let’s recap!

In yesterday’s lesson we focussed on the purpose and audience of our persuasive letters.

We started off by identifying the persuasive techniques used as:

Flattery: Someone as intelligent as you knows what the right decision is…
Presumptions: I have no doubt that you will make the right decision.
Veiled threat: If you do not react to this situation, the consequences could be huge.

We also discussed the purpose and audience of our letter:

To write a letter to the Education Secretary asking for it to mandatory that all schools in the UK must have a school uniform.

We discussed (at home and online) the following question:

Why is school uniform a good thing?

As a class we came up with the following answers:

• It helps everyone to feel included

• It gives children a sense of belonging
• It makes children easily identifiable on school trips
• It is relatively cheap to buy
• It avoids bullying about clothes
• School uniform is practical, smart and comfortable
• Uniform ensures everyone is the same
• You have a sense of pride when you wear a uniform

We decided that the two most important points were:

1 - School uniform is cheaper for parents/carers
2 - Having a uniform means there is no competition between pupils.

Below are the examples of the explanations and evidence we discussed on zoom.

Wednesday 6th January 2021

Hello Class 4,

I am so glad we are ready for home learning together and whilst things at first may seem slightly strange I know that once we get going we will all pull together and do our best to ensure we are keeping up with our home learning.

One important difference to the online learning that took place last year is that we will be setting up daily “registration” and “home time” meetings using ZOOM. We know that many families are already familiar with this app. If you haven’t already installed it, it is available from the zoom website (www.zoom.com) or via your app-store on your phone. The meetings will take place each day at 9:30 am and 2:30 pm. They will be a great way of discussing the tasks for the day ahead, teaching some elements and then giving advice or assistance if it is needed. Class 4’s Private Meeting Room will be open at the times stated above.

A note to parents: It will be important that you support your child in downloading or printing the pdf documents before each morning zoom call (found on Class 4 webpage) so that children can see clearly what work they are carrying out. Please could you pick up their home learning packs today (Wednesday) any time before 4.30pm. Please also get in touch ASAP if your child is learning from home but does not have access to their internet or a laptop/device to access zoom calls. On Wednesday 6th January there will only be one zoom call taking place at 2.30pm. This will be to check all can access zoom, to explain to children how things will work and to ensure that everyone has everything they will need to learn in the weeks ahead. Daily zoom lessons will then commence from Thursday 7th January.

I hope you all keep safe and try your best to enjoy this new experience.

Miss Jenkinson.
