MATHS

At St Gerard’s we aim to support our children in developing a love of maths as well as a good understanding of what they are doing.  We achieve this with a balance between practical and written work, as well as supporting the children to make links within their learning.

Regular practise of mental maths skills is used to support the children’s learning, for example the use of number bonds in Year 1, double and halves in Year 2 as well as x2, x5 and x10 tables.  Year 3 and 4 focus on the remaining times tables being able to recall facts with fluency and understanding the division facts from these.  Year 5 and 6 continue to practise and apply these skills in different ways.  We work hard to ensure that the children can see links between what they do in school and everyday life; for example counting in 10’s and knowing number bonds to 10, helps the children to mentally calculate money and measurements.

Maths can be daunting for some children and parents and we always reassure the children that even though maths can be difficult, if you keep practising you will get better.  Games are a really good way to encourage this, both on the internet and board games.  The children will be given log-ons for Abacus so that the can have free access to games linked to their learning in school however there are lots of other free sites available, have a look round and above all  - HAVE FUN WITH MATHS!
