Class 2 - A snapshot of school life for Year 1 and Year 2

Welcome to Class Two

Mrs Wallace is our dedicated class teacher for Class Two, alongside Mrs Ellison our Higher Level Teaching Assistant. Our Physical Education (PE) days are observed every Monday, taught by Mr Wallace, and Thursday, taught by our PE specialist, Mrs Sharp. We provide new homework to our children on Friday as well as a stage appropriate reading book throughout the week.

Phonics

In Class 2, we provide comprehensive daily phonics lessons tailored to meet your child's individual understanding and knowledge. At St Gerard’s we follow the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme and it is designed to enhance every child’s reading abilities and language development.

Following the phonics session, your child will engage in a literacy lesson that encompasses a range of tasks related to topic work, history, geography or science. These activities aim to further enhance their broader knowledge and understanding of these subjects as well as providing rich opportunities to further their vocabulary.

Maths

We offer daily math lessons for your children, with Year 1 and Year 2 students being divided into separate classes for optimized teaching. These lessons adhere to the esteemed White Rose Maths scheme, which aims to foster a genuine passion for mathematics and cultivate a strong comprehension among the young learners.

Reading

In Class 2, reading remains the cornerstone of our curriculum. Our dedicated staff make it a priority to read to the children multiple times throughout the day, ensuring their exposure to a rich variety of literature. To foster engagement and involvement, we have implemented a system where the children actively participate in selecting the book to be read at the end of each day.

Important Information

PE

In the current term, our designated PE days are Monday and Thursday. Each Thursday, the highly engaging PE lessons are conducted by Mrs. Sharp. These sessions are designed to aid children in their physical development by enhancing their gross motor skills, teaching them body control, and providing knowledge about the human body as well as broad spectrum activities that will progress to more game specific sessions as they develop through school.

Homework

Homework is assigned to students every Friday to reinforce their learning and development. The specific homework assigned to your child depends on their phonics group. We strongly encourage parents to actively participate in their child's homework routine and devote time daily to reading and practicing together. This collaborative effort enables a more effective learning experience and contributes to your child's academic progress. We also provide children with the opportunity to further their times table knowledge through the TT Rockstars programme.
